Privacy Policy

The Boston Water and Sewer Commission (Commission) has developed a Privacy Policy that identifies certain types of information collected by the Commission and how the Commission uses this information.

Data Collection

The Boston Water and Sewer Commission (Commission) has developed a Privacy Policy that identifies certain types of information collected by the Commission and how the Commission uses and protects this information. Please note that this policy applies only to the Commission’s website. If you click on to a link provided on the Commission’s website you are strongly advised to review that link’s privacy policy.

The Commission does not collect “cookies.” The Commission does collect data about visitors to its website. The information collected identifies how the visitor came to the site, the number of visitors to the site, and how long a visitor remains on a page.

On-Line Services

In order to access specific on-line services such as tracking your water consumption, viewing your account, or paying your bill, the Commission requires that you provide your water and sewer account number and access number. These numbers can be found on your water bill. The access number is the last 4 digits of your water meter number and cannot be changed or modified on-line in any way.

While the Commission attempts to protect your privacy to the maximum extent possible, your account number and access number needed to log on to these services is not part of a secure connection. The Commission does however use a secure service for its on-line payment transactions. (See On-line Transactions below)

If you choose not to provide your account number and access number, you will still be able to view all other areas of the Commission’s website. However, you will not be able to view specific information concerning your account.

On-line Transactions

Visitors to the Commission’s web site have the option of paying water and sewer bills on-line by clicking on “CheckFree” and entering their account number and access number as it appears on the bill. By clicking on this link, visitors leave the Commission’s website and are directed to the CheckFree site. CheckFree is a secure service used by the Commission to process on-line payments. Information about the types of personal information collected by CheckFree and how it is used and how it is safeguarded by CheckFree may be obtained by clicking on the CheckFree Privacy Policy on the website. The Commission’s on-line payment service uses several methods such as SSL (secure sockets layer) to ensure that users’ information is secure and that such information is encrypted as supported by the user’s browser.

Third parties are not authorized by the Commission to use your personal information in any other way. The Commission will not sell, transfer or assign personal information used on the website to any other entity.
