The illegal operation of fire hydrants is dangerous and can result in breaks and the malfunction of the hydrant when needed for fire emergencies. Keep neighborhoods safe; report open hydrants to 617-989-7000.
Boston Water and Sewer Commission (BWSC) funds and maintains a Capital Improvement Program (CIP) to ensure that its water and sewer systems are efficient, safe and up-to-date as well as protecting the environment. The CIP is made up of water, sewer and support programs. Funding for the CIP is provided through five sources: BWSC’s general revenue bonds, current year rate revenues, traditional grant reimbursements and grant/loan programs provided by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA).
In this section, you will find detailed information on major construction projects currently underway in Boston. The information will provide project purpose and description as well as BWSC contacts. In addition, there is also a Project Lookup section that will identify any on-going water and sewer work in your neighborhood or where you work.
This section also describes the Citywide Sewer Connection Dye Testing Program that identifies illegal building connections that allow untreated sewage to discharge into local waterways and the harbor.
The Preventative Maintenance section provides information on BWSC’s water main flushing program as well as the catch basin cleaning work. You can find out when and where water main flushing will take place. If you would like to report a clogged catch basin or if you see someone dumping material into a catch basin, please call 617-989-7000.
