Boston Water and Sewer Commission will be performing a Sewer System Evaluation Survey (SSES) in the Jamaica Plain area. A Site map showing the limits of the survey area is linked below. This investigation is being undertaken as part of our efforts to identify the specific locations of defects in the sanitary sewer system. Field work will begin in February. Defects in the sewer system allow groundwater and/or rainwater to enter the pipes and manholes that make up the system. Stormwater and groundwater in the sewer system are typically referred to as infiltration and inflow. Infiltration and inflow take up pipe capacity and increase the likelihood of surcharging in the pipes during heavy rain. Defects in the sewer system include, cracked and broken pipes as well as catch basins, yard drains and sump pumps designed to collect stormwater runoff that are connected to the sewer system instead if the drainage system.

Boston Police Department, Boston Fire Department and other City Agencies have been informed of this work.

Additional information below.
The Commission appreciates your cooperation in our efforts to improve the service in your neighborhood.
