Project Summary

The project includes the excavation and replacement of existing water mains, valves, and hydrants and the replacement and rehabilitation of sewers and drains on Bowdoin Street and Ashburton Place.    

Bowdoin Street – Beacon Street to Derne Street

  •  Replacement of 550’ of 1899 16” cast iron water pipe with 16” ductile iron zinc coated pipe
  •  Replacement of two hydrants
  •  Rehabilitation of 410’ of 12” vitrified clay combined sewer pipe with 12” structural liners

Ashburton Place – Bowdoin Street to Somerset Street

  • Replacement of 350’ of 1899 12” cast iron water pipe with 12” ductile iron zinc coated pipe
  • Replacement of one hydrant

Water Phase Scope of Work
Water Phase I:   Feb Water, sewer and drainage service investigations inside buildings within limits of work -  COMPLETE 
Water Phase II: May – June

Install temporary water by-pass - COMPLETE

Water Phase III: July - Aug

Excavation to replace water mains - ACTIVE

Anticipated Impacts

The anticipated impacts include water service interruptions, noise, traffic and parking modifications, rodent activity, dust, and general construction impacts. The contractor will be required to minimize impacts to the extent feasible.

To minimize traffic impacts, excavation work along the Massachusetts State House will be coordinated with the State legislative summer session which coincides with Boston Public Schools summer recess.  

Surface Restoration

Temporary restoration of roadways, sidewalks and other areas disturbed by construction will be completed under this contract. Concrete or brick sidewalks will be restored within six weeks, weather dependent. A permanent restoration will occur under a separate paving contract.
