Sewer abatements allow a separate meter, approved by BWSC, to be placed on the property to register water not entering BWSC's sewer system. Examples include an in-ground irrigation system or water-cooled air conditioning system. The abatement meter is scheduled to be read daily and the customer is given a sewer credit for the amount of water registered on it. Sewer credits are applied monthly.

To qualify for the abatement, customers must follow the process outlined in the Sewer Abatement General Guidelines Statement. In most cases, you will need to install a Backflow Prevention Device to protect drinking water from contamination, also known as Cross Connection Control.

The following items must be completed and submitted to BWSC by the legal title holder of property prior to any sewer charge abatement approval:

  • Sewer Abatement Program Application/Drawing Sheet
  • Backflow Preventer Device Design Data Sheet
  • MTU Receipt Number

Submit completed Abatement Package and check to:

             Boston Water and Sewer Commission
             Attn: Meter Services
             980 Harrison Avenue
             Boston, MA 02119

Cost is $325.00 per Meter Transmission Unit (MTU). Make check payable to: Boston Water and Sewer Commission
