To reduce our carbon footprint, we’re converting our fleet to zero-emissions vehicles starting with our vehicle over the next decade. This aligns with our work with the City of Boston on Climate Resiliency.

BWSC Drives Electric is an initiative to inform the public and stakeholder about the agency’s efforts to date to electrify its fleet, and what coming to move to the next phase of the project.

Our commitment to transitioning to a more sustainable fleet will require significant time and financial investment. This is our plan to modernize our fleet:

  • Replace all retiring light duty vehicles (SUVs and pick-ups) with only all-electric vehicles
  • Upgrade electrical infrastructure and install charging stations to support the transition
  • Assess and implement additional opportunities to transition to a more sustainable fleet

As part of a Green New Deal for Boston, this program meets the following goals:

  • Reduced carbon footprint: ZEVs reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and help mitigate the BWSC's carbon footprint
  • Reduced maintenance and improved reliability:Modernized work environments for maintenance staff and updated vehicles   bring our fleet and facilities to a State of Good Repair—this reduces maintenance costs and supports safety and reliability
  • Improved air quality: ZEVs improve the air quality and reduce potential human health impacts to both fleet drivers and the community served

What We’re Doing Now

We’re taking a phased approach to purchasing additional vehicles and upgrading the facilities that will support a Zero-Emissions Fleet.
