Lead Sampling - Spring 2024
Recently, in spring 2024, BWSC conducted mandatory testing in a number of homes that are known to have a lead service line. This test is required by federal and state regulation to evaluate the incidence of lead and copper in drinking water. The water quality sampling taken in Boston in spring 2024 consisted of 33 homes. The result showed that elevated levels of lead were found in 2 homes. This sample result was 11.7 ppb which is below the allowable lead action level of 15 ppb.
For background, the water provided by BWSC comes from MWRA’s reservoirs and it is lead-free. While the result of the recent sampling was below the action level, some older homes in Boston may have a lead service line. The Commission encourages property owners to confirm the composition of the service line that delivers drinking water to the property. Inspection and removal of lead service lines are conducted by the Commission at no cost! More important, due to the health risks associated with lead, especially in children and pregnant women, property owners should take advantage of this program. BWSC customers can call our Lead Hotline at (617) 989-7888 to schedule a free inspection.
