Piers Park in East Boston

East Boston

This project is the fourth phase of a multi-year program to separate combined sewers in East Boston. Sewer separation involves installing new storm drains to carry stormwater and using the existing combined sewer to carry sewage. This work will improve water quality by reducing the number and volume of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to Chelsea Creek and Boston Harbor, which currently occurs when heavy rainfall inundates the combined sewer. In addition to installing new storm drains, the Commission will be replacing or repairing deteriorated sewer pipes and replacing aged water mains.

Construction will take place under five (5) separate contracts that will be implemented in various East Boston neighborhoods. Construction is expected to take six years to complete, beginning with the first contract starting in September 2025 and ending with completion of the final contract in the fall of 2031.

Please see the linked Project Documents to view the status of the current project as well as the overview map of Phase IV.
